BIOHYDROMETALLURGY:BIOMYTHOLOGY OR BIG BUSINESS?? (C.R. KUPP)

Dear Dr. Tzeferis
Thanks your message,as I mentiomed in last message I am intended to define my Ph.H thesis about lateritre bioleaching but I am not sure about it. I read some of your papers that I access them. Your work was comprehensive and useful and I think you can help me, There are few questions as follow:
- According your experience, do you recommend me to I select my Ph.D thesis topic about laterite leaching using fungi?
- If you were able to do your thesis again what things would you focuse on? Do you have new idea about laterite bioleaching to has potential being Ph.D thesis?
I would be grateful if I have your Ph.D thesis file

Sincerely,

Dear friend,

1. My phd thesis is available but only in the Greek language with summaries in english:
Tzeferis phd thesis

You can ask from the authority providing the phd thesis, if any translation of the whole thesis is available.

2. There are copies of my papers (about laterite herterotrophic bioleaching) that have been edited in the whole world and some of them are in the internet. If you can't find any, I can send a copy to you.

3. Concerning your critical question, it depends on a number of things. As a former researcher in laterite bioleaching, I strongly recommend you continue this work, despite the fact that the laterite deposits are considered "difficult" for bioleaching processes. Do you have laterite (oxidised heterogeneous nature) deposits in your country? Do you have sulphide minerals (e.g pentlandite), bearing nickel? This is a factor that may affect future utilisation of your possible phD research. For instance, a recent bioheapleaching process was established in Finland Talvivaara deposits for the extraction of nickel from the largest known polymetallic sulphide nickel resources in Europe (in Talvivaara). The mine started in late 2008 and will have annual nickel output of approximately 50,000 tons of nickel when it reaches full production, and it is very promising but as you presume it is a process concerning suplide ores, not laterites.

4. Concerning using fungi or not, if you choose doing a phd in laterite bioleaching you have to use heterotrophic microorganisms, especially fungi. The metal extraction by fungal-produced acids seem to occur through two possible mechanisms, which can take place separately or simultaneously. First, metal cations may be directly displaced from the ore by hydrogen ions produced by the fungi resulting in a common acid leaching mechanism. Second, compounds produced by the microorganism can bind metals into soluble complexes by chelation.

If you choose laterite heterotrophic bioleaching, I advice you to:

a. determine the most effective process method in your laterite case: the direct approach, where the ore is contacted directly with nutrients and fungi , or the indirect approach, where the "bioacid" is fermented separately to produce a broth for leaching in a stirred reactor or a heap.

b. establish viable fungi cultures that have been acclimated for nickel leaching conditions and generally the toxic environment of laterite (bearing toxic metals) bioleaching.

c. If you want to reach to a pilot plant result you have to proceed from the Shake flask leaching studies (I did only these studies 20 years ago) to a Heap leaching process. So, work in heaps and demonstrate the feasibility of the bio-assisted heap leaching process for the selective dissolution of nickel from laterite ores.

d. determine the important process parameters, such as inoculum addition, acid addition composition(s), flowrate of recycle water, size distribution of agglomerated ore particles, effect of ions in recycle water, and initial and interim additions of the carbon source.
